Stage 01 · Customer Value

Customer Value.

Every business exists to serve its customer.

Understanding what matters to the customer gives the business a shared point of reference for its priorities, decisions and work.

The connections within the business matter because they affect what the customer receives. The Core Four and The Seven help leaders look at those connections in everyday practice.

What matters to the customer your business exists to serve, and how well are you delivering it?

Stage 02 · The Core Four

The Core Four.

The Core Four are Purpose, People, Process and Performance. OAI aligns these around Customer Value, helping leaders see how the business works as a whole and how its parts support one another.

Purpose

Why the business exists, what matters and the contribution required in service of Customer Value.

Why does this work exist and what are we trying to achieve?

People

The clarity, capability, support, authority and connection people need to contribute effectively.

Do people have what they need to succeed?

Process

How work and information flow through the business.

Does the Agreed Way allow work and information to move effectively?

Performance

What the business is actually doing, delivering and achieving.

What does the evidence show is actually happening?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 01

Our Purpose

Our Purpose connects people and their contribution to shared Purpose and Customer Value. It helps teams understand why their work matters and who it ultimately serves.

Do people understand why their work matters and who it ultimately serves?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 02

Our Value Chain

Our Value Chain connects each contribution to the customer outcome. It makes internal customers and the transfer of work and information visible, so people can understand what the next person or team needs to succeed.

Who receives our work next, and how does it ultimately affect our customer?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 03

Our Communication Style

Our Communication Style creates shared understanding through communication suited to the audience. The Circle makes the communication loop visible: Sent → Received → Understood → Confirmed.

Has the message been Received, Understood and Confirmed, or was it merely sent?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 04

Our Navigator

Our Navigator keeps the Agreed Way clear and current: how work has been agreed, who owns it, where authority sits and what needs approval. Shared standards and guidance help us stay aligned and on course. Through an evidence-based approach, we can identify when the Agreed Way needs review or deliberate improvement.

Is the Agreed Way clear, who owns it, and do people know what they can change and what needs approval?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 05

Our Improvement Practice

Our Improvement Practice begins with understanding the current condition. We draw on evidence and the knowledge of people closest to the work, take deliberate steps to improve and learn from what happens. Recognised methodologies such as PDCA can support testing and reviewing a proposed improvement.

Do we understand the current condition well enough before deciding what should change?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 06

Our Visible Learning

People make mistakes. Hidden mistakes repeat. Visible mistakes teach.

Our Visible Learning helps people learn together from mistakes, near misses, rework, customer feedback and everyday experience. By understanding what happened and the conditions around the work, people can identify improvements and share learning that others can use.

Whilst the individual owns their mistake, sharing the learning can benefit the whole business. Mistakes are another form of learning.

What is reality teaching us, and who else needs to learn from it?

Stage 03 · The Seven · 07

Our Rhythm

Our Rhythm is a whole-of-business state of being, with people at its centre. It reflects how people, work, information, decisions, learning and support connect around shared Purpose and Customer Value. Different people and teams can work at different tempos while moving together, Aligned as One.

Are people connected, aware of one another, and working together around what matters?

Stage 04 · Dependability

Dependability.

Dependability earns trust. Trust strengthens loyalty.

Dependability is the ability to keep our commitments repeatedly through the way the business works.

A dependable business cannot rely indefinitely on exceptional effort to achieve ordinary results.

Repeated rescue efforts can reveal where the work needs stronger connections, resources or support.

What needs attention so the business can keep its commitments through the way the work is organised and carried out?

Stage 05 · Thriving

Thriving.

Thriving is success the business can sustain.

Thriving grows from consistently serving the customer well. It gives the business the strength and capacity to sustain that value into the future.

Success can happen.
Thriving is success the business can sustain.

That brings the connection back to Customer Value: how well the business serves its customer remains central to what success means.

Operational Drift

When the actual way moves away from the Agreed Way.

Understand the gap between the actual way and the Agreed Way.

Operational Drift is the gradual and often subtle unmanaged movement away from the Agreed Way. The Agreed Way is how the business has agreed work should happen. It needs to remain clear, current, understood, workable and supported. Small adjustments and workarounds can become normal without being reviewed. Alignment helps make that movement visible, understand why it is happening and decide what needs attention. Deliberate, authorised improvement keeps the Agreed Way current.

Is the business connected around what matters?

Operational Alignment connects Purpose, People, Process and Performance around Customer Value. The different parts of the business need to support one another in everyday work. Making the actual way visible helps leaders understand where those connections need attention.

Does the business do what it says it will do?

Operational Integrity is visible when everyday actions support the commitments, standards and values the business says matter. Compare what the business says with what the work shows.

Within OAI, DRIFT — Recognising Patterns of Operational Drift™ focuses attention on those patterns.

Success is the reward for
serving the customer well.
